Toyger
Place of Origin:
Date of Origin: Breed Registries: TICA Weight Range: Grooming: The Toyger is much easier to groom than a tiger and only needs grooming once a week because of the breed's short fur. Fur Length: Shorthaired Colors and Patterns: Tabby patterns and stretched, branched out rosettes and circular head markings. Description: The Toyger has a large, long body and tabby patterns with circular head markings. History: Many cats are named Tiger, but it wasn’t until Judy Sugden, a Bengal breeder, noticed two spots on her cat Millwood Sharp Shooter’s otherwise tabby head that it occurred to her to start developing a domestic cat that truly resembled a tiger. Starting with a striped shorthair named Scrapmetal, one of her Bengals named Millwood Rumpled Spotskin, and an imported cat from Kashmir, India, she began trying to breed a cat that had spots instead of tabby markings on the cat’s head. She worked at trying to create a living-room tiger along with other breeders Anthony Hutcherson and Alice McKee. The domestic cat they developed had a large, long body, and tabby patterns and stretched out rosettes with circular head markings that the breeders named the Toyger. TICA began to register the Toyger in 1993 as an advanced new breed and granted the new breed status in 2000. TICA granted full breed championship recognition in 2007. Currently, TICA is the only association that recognizes the Toyger. Personality/Temperament: The Toyger is friendly and playful. The breed likes people in other pets, and will often play fetch, bat feathers around, and spend time with family members. The Toyger is very intelligent and can play tricks and providing puzzle toys. |
