Aegean
Place of Origin: Greece Date of Origin: Unknown Breed Registries: No major registries Weight Range: Unknown Grooming: Once a week Fur Length: Short-haired Colors and Patterns: Description: History: The history of the Aegean cat breed likely goes back for many centuries. Archeologists have discovered evidence that domestic cats lived in Cyprus, a close neighbor of Greece, at least ten thousand years ago. It is reasonable to think that the cats migrated to Greece by way of fishing boats that would be more than happy to have cats rid them of mice and rats. The Aegean is common in its homeland and recognized as a distinct breed in the past couple of decades. Some consider the Aegean to be the Greek national treasure. It is likely related to other breeds that developed in the region, such as the Turkish Angora. The Aegean is not recognized by any major cat registries, such as The International Cat Association (TICA) or The Cat Fanciers Association (CFA). Personality/Temperament: Ageans tend to be smart, lively, and good communicators. They are generally friendly towards people and are excellent family cats. True to their heritage, the Aegean is an island breed and does not disdain water like many other breeds. Some Aegeans may fish for themselves, which means that aquariums and koi ponds will need to be protected from the curious cats. The Agean likes being part of the family and is well suited for most types of homes. An outdoor enclosed area would be good for them, as the Aegean breed developed naturally outside.
